Cristiano Ronaldo has been withdrawn from Portugal’s starting lineup for tonight’s last-16 match against Switzerland, after enraging coach Fernando Santos by being substituted against South Korea.
Ronaldo, who has only registered one goal in the competition—a penalty in Portugal’s opening match against Ghana—was noticeably upset when he was substituted after 65 minutes in last week’s 2-1 loss.
Santos acknowledged his displeasure with Ronaldo’s response on Monday, but he believed that the situation had been resolved. However, he did not go so far as to say that the forward would go first.
