Sadio Mane of Bayern Munich has been selected the recipient of the Men’s Player of the Year Award by CAF, the organization that oversees football in Africa.
The midfielder won the prize after defeating Edouard Mendy, a fellow countryman who plays for Chelsea Football Club, and Mohamed Salah, a former teammate at Liverpool. The award was last won by a Senegalese player when it was held in 2019.
Following his outstanding performance for the Senegal Terenga Lions at the Africa Cup of Nations, which was held in Cameroon, Mane was named the best player in Africa.
The 28-year-old played a significant role in Senegal’s qualification for the FIFA World Cup, which will be held in Qatar later this year (November/December 2022). He also netted the winning penalty that gave his nation the prize.
The midfielder also contributed significantly to Liverpool throughout the recently finished football season (2021/22). At Chelsea Football Club’s cost, the Reds won the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup. However, they were defeated by Manchester City and Real Madrid in the Premier League and UEFA Champions League, respectively.
The Women’s Africa Cup of Nations award ceremony took place on Thursday, July 21, 2022, in Rabat, Morocco, which is also the host country.
