The London club announced the acquisition of Enzo Fernandez, a teenage player from Argentina, from Benfica for a then-record £105 million transfer fee. Prior to joining Arsenal Football Club, Jorginho wore the number 5 jersey.
As a result, Fernandez is the most expensive player in British club history. The amount is higher than the £100 million that Manchester City paid Aston Villa for Jack Grealish.
One of the deals that caused trouble for the Chelsea board of directors was Fernandez’s arrival. The board of Benfica was unwilling to consider any proposal that fell short of the player’s release clause. He has a contract that will keep him at Chelsea through the summer of 2031, though.
Chelsea has already spent £290 million on eight new players during this transfer window, including Fernandez. The 22-year-old is anticipated to step into Jorginho’s shoes, who departed to join Arsenal Football Club.
Enzo Fernández has completed also the second part of medical tests after the first one in Portugal. 🔵✅🩺 #CFC
