Ghanaian Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Godfrey Gopep of St. Finbarrs’ Catholic Church in Rayfield, has cautioned Christians to refrain from organizing expensive burial ceremonies for their dead relatives.
Rev. Gopep advised his members during a church service on Sunday 25th September 2022 at his church auditorium.
He told his congregation to help those who are still alive and cut off the expensive burial ceremonies.
Rev. Gopep said he has observed that the big donors at burial ceremonies mostly don’t assist the deceased financially when they were among the living.
“I have observed that most Christian burials are expensive; we sink huge amounts of money to bury our loved ones. Sometimes, those who donated huge sums for the burial didn’t support the deceased when he or she was alive” he said.
He noted that some churches even go to the extreme of charging an amount of money from the family of the deceased before conducting the funeral service.
“It has become like a show and competition among families; I heard that some churches now demand a fee before they conduct funerals”, he added.
He sent a word of caution to all Christians and advised them to stop spending huge amount of money on funeral services.
