Chelsea Football Club applauds the FA’s decision to classify the homophobic chant directed at their fans as a rule violation that may result in disciplinary action. This comes after the Crown Prosecution Service determined that this incredibly nasty chant qualified as a hate crime.
There is no place for the “Rent Boy” shout in football or anyplace else. It’s a step in the right way that opposing clubs can now be punished if their fans act in a discriminating and disrespectful manner. Anyone who chooses to take part in this chant must understand that their decisions have an impact.
We will continue to collaborate with the FA, the CPS, rival clubs, and our own LGBTQI+ supporter organization Chelsea Pride in the effort to bring about constructive change alongside our No To Hate campaign. There is still more work to be done, but we won’t stop until football is an inclusive sport.
