Charges of attempted rape, coercive behavior, and one count of assault resulting in serious bodily harm against Man United star Mason Greenwood have been dismissed.
Greenwood, 21, was charged in October 2022, but this afternoon the CPS decided to end the case in accordance with the Crown Prosecutors’ Code of Conduct.
The player, who has one England cap, was initially detained in January when pictures and videos were shared online and suspicions regarding a young woman surfaced.
He was later fired from United and removed from the FIFA 22 game.
A CPS spokesperson said: ‘We have a duty to keep cases under continuous review.
‘In this case a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction. In these circumstances, we are under a duty to stop the case.
‘We have explained our decision to all parties.
In accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors, Greenwood was charged in October 2022, but this afternoon it was decided to end the case.
Mason Greenwood was detained in January, Manchester United promptly suspended him. The CPS now dismissed all three accusations that were brought against the same woman.
